Winter came early this year with a cold and wet start to November followed by a very cold middle to end and the coldest month in December since February 1986
Any wasps which had not gone into hibernation will have died due to the weather conditions, luckily the poor October will have driven many into early hibernation.
It remains to be seen what this year’s adverse weather, and in particular the timing of it, will have on the UK’s wasp population in 2011.
Numbers were undoubtedly lower in 2010, following another poor year for them in 2009. However the mild start to the year in 2011 could be good for them, if this continues into March and they emerge early from hibernation there will be less competition from other colonies for food and building materials and this may lead to larger than normal colonies evolving.
