Wasp report April 2012

The coldest April for 20 years and generally unsettled with numerous showery days making it one of the wettest Aprils on record.

This will have had a very detrimental effect on the Queens that have emerged from hibernation already and commenced their nest building, and also will have affected those still in their hibernation cocoons unless they were located safely away from the effects of the bad weather.

The likelihood is that the wasp population this is likely to be relatively small in terms of the number of nests but, as a consequence, the individual nests that do survive may be larger than usual due to the lack of competition for food and building materials.
