Wasp report September 2010

Yet another changeable month in terms of the weather, bands of rain and showers crossing the country, warm days followed by cold days, calm days followed by blustery days.

Very low records of stinging incidents and general activity, especially when compared to September 2009 which had record levels, and particularly as September is traditionally the worst month for wasps stings as they are nearing the end of their life cycle, and as their job of providing food for the colony is done and they keep the food fro themselves, often getting ‘drunk’ on fruit which ferments inside them.

A similar pattern is shown in records of Bee activity so our feeling is that this has been a poor year for the wasp community.
